The dataset everyone has, no one uses.

The dataset is the most valuable thing the company produces. It's also, almost everywhere, the most completely wasted.

Most companies do not lack data. They lack a relationship with the data they already produce.

Take any team you've worked on that did good work. Replay a normal Tuesday in your head. The senior asks a junior a question that quietly re-routes a deal. The mentor moment that took ninety seconds and saved a quarter. The customer who said the same thing twice in a row, in different words, and the AE who heard it the second time. The careful, almost reluctant decision to walk away from a feature request the leadership team had been excited about.

That Tuesday is the dataset. It is richer than the CRM. It is richer than the BI dashboard. It is richer than the quarterly review. It contains, in detail, every piece of information the organization will eventually need to know about itself — every pattern, every precedent, every near-miss, every reason a decision went the way it did.

It is also, almost everywhere, gone by Wednesday.

The waste is not accidental. It is the structural consequence of how organizations have learned to think about evidence. Evidence, in most companies, has historically meant the deliberate output of a deliberate process: the report, the deck, the post-mortem, the customer interview. Anything that didn't survive translation into one of those forms didn't count.

That model made sense when capture was expensive and structure was expensive and inference was expensive. It does not make sense now. All three costs have collapsed.

What hasn't collapsed is the muscle for treating the working day itself as the source of evidence. We are still a year or two behind our own infrastructure.
